  • "This catalogue accompanied the succesful "Figures & Fictions" exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and presents the photographic culture that has emerged in post-apartheid South Africa.

It brings together 17 South African photographers whose work responds to the cultural and social changes their country has undergone. The book features works by David Goldblatt, Guy Tillim and Jodi Bieber, and by newcomers to the international stage like Zanele Muholi and Sabelo Mlangeni. Their photographs provide a vivid snapshot of what it means to be a South African today.

The publication includes an excellent introductory essay on the origins of contemporary South African photography written by Tamar Garb, Professor of Art History at University College London and curator of the exhibition. In addition to the great number of images shown in the book, it contains interviews, artist's statements and biographies"
